Velekkat Vishnumaya Swami Temple, also known as Velekkatt Chathan Temple, is a Hindu temple located at Palapetty Beach in the Thrissur District of Kerala, India. It is dedicated to the deity Vishnumaya Swami and is renowned for its magical powers. The temple is considered the primary shrine among all Vishnumaya Swami temples in Kerala, particularly in Malabar. Referred to as the “moolasthanam” (main abode), the temple showcases Vishnumaya Swami in his fierce form facing East, with two hands holding a magical wand called Kuruvadi and a magical pot known as amrutha kumbam, while riding on a water buffalo. The temple derived its name, Veekkat Vishnumaya Swami Temple, from the surrounding Ricinus plants, locally called “Velekkat Temple” The temple is often recognized as the original form of Vishnumaya Swami and his 389 brothers. It holds historical significance as 10 of Vishnumaya’s brothers sacrificed their lives in a war between Shiva boothas (Shiva’s army) and the demon Briga Rakshas. The central location of the temple in Kerala has earned it the name “Vishnumaya Chathan Temple” among Tamil speakers. The temple’s worship follows ancient Shakthyem customs, rarely observed in contemporary Kerala temples.
Velekkat Kuttichathan Temple was established by the magician Kunjivelu, who initially employed black magic to appease Kuttichathan. Passing on his mystical abilities to his son Bhaskaran, the lineage continued to utilize these powers for financial gain. Notably, Bhaskaran ensured the prosperity of his descendants before his passing.
Following Bhaskaran, his sons Manoj Kumar and Baburajendraprasad dutifully carried on the traditions. Eventually, Baburajendraprasad’s sons, Binoy Rajendraprasad and Shinoy Rajendraprasad, devoutly served Vishnumayaswami, ensuring the continuation of their family’s legacy. Later, Shinoy and Binoy relocated to Dubai, prompting Manoj Kumar and Babu Rajendraprasad to generously gift the temple to all family members.
Presently, a committee oversees the temple’s operations and development initiatives. This sacred site remains a beacon of spiritual guidance and communal harmony, perpetuating the timeless traditions of Vishnumayaswami for generations to come.
